TICK DRIFT TO THE TOWNS. Further interesting particulars of population are to be obtained from the. details of tho Now Zealand census published in booklet form by the Government Statisticaii. The total population (exclusive of Maoris and that of annexed Pacific Islands) is made up thus: Males Females 476,5*9 Half - castes living as Europea ms 2,877 Chinese 2,0fi7 It •trill bo seen that the excess of males over females is 54,303, which shows that the general relative positions of the sox o-3 is being practically maintained. T3i the 1301 census tho proportion of females to every hundred males was 00.33, but tho 1306 census showed that tho percentage had dropped to 83.6.1. PROVINCIAL DISTRICTS. Tho population is distributed among tlio provincial districts as fellows;—

Tho opening up of tho North Island luis caused a correspondingly rapid advance of pox>ulxition of late years, compared with the more fully developed South Island. Relative increases during a series of counts arc quoted :

During this series of years New Zealand’s population has not always increased at tho same ratio. It showed an advance of 8.33 per cent, for the five years ended 1831, and 12.24. per cent., during tho next period, but dropped to" 9.85 per cent, on the showing of the 1301 census.- In 1906 the numerical increase of 116,839 gave a percentage of 15.12. This year’s enumeration shows a record total increase of 119,829, being at the rate of 11.88 per cent. TOWN POPULATION. A steady drift to the town shown iu all previous returns is again indicated, the balance of population having since 1308 definitely turned the scale in favour of the towns". Tho country population is returned at 496,742, and that of the boroughs 503,598. The growth of urban population is best illustrated by percentage oompaiisons with tho county population thus:
