POULTRY FARMING
fTo the Editor " N.Z. Times.'*) Sir,—The Government have spent largo snrm of money encouraging farmers a-nd amateurs to grow fcnvls for table and egglaying. It seems to mo either the wheatgroover, tlio miller, or the grocer, or all three, are doing their best to retard the industry. Five years ago pollard was sold retail at Is 8d per bushel; to-day it is sold retail in the suburbs at 2s 3d per bushel. Does wheat cost more to grow, or mill, or distribute now than it did then? The absolute absurdity of maintaining a Customs tariff on such things as wheat products and food stuffs generally, in view of facts such ns the above, ought to bo apparent to everyone. Let us have froe-trsvJe, and if that does not effect a remedy (whilst I do not pose aa a Socialist) I think we might as well try a dose of State Socialism in tlio milling.—l am, etc., SOiTMON-SE^SE. July Bth.
