The following letter, ■written from Madeira by Captain Roald Amundsen, Captain'Scott's Norwegian rival in the race for the South Pole, to a member of the committee, to finance his work in the Arctic, is published in the Norwegian newspapers : "You ought to have been told long ego, but X did not venture to. I-have taken the decision alone, and must bear the responsibility alone. The Fram goes direct south from-Madeira into the Antarctic regions in order to compete with the Englishmen for the South Pole. Everything is well thought out and worked out, so X have the best hops of success. ■ r T intend to Land with nine of the others. The Pram will then go into the Atlantic to carry out oceanographic observations. In 1912 she will return to fetch us. We shall then touch at New Zealand to telegraph, continuing from there to San Francisco. Kindly convey to the other members of the committee my greetings and my apologies for bavacted independently of them. tr We have food enough, for two years and'.work enough to look forward to.
