The following letter, ■written from Madeira by Captain Roald Amundsen, Captain'Scott's Norwegian rival in the race for the South Pole, to a member of the committee, to finance his work in the Arctic, is published in the Norwegian newspapers : "You ought to have been told long ego, but X did not venture to. I-have taken the decision alone, and must bear the responsibility alone. The Fram goes direct south from-Madeira into the Antarctic regions in order to compete with the Englishmen for the South Pole.
