EMPIRE DAY
CELEBRATIONS IN BRITAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, May 24. Empire Day was celebrated by the majority of the elementary schools in England and Wales by saluting ~tho Union Jack. The cadet corps and children, of .the public schools paraded. , Tho King and Queen attended the League of Mercy’s Empire garden party at Whits Lodge, Richmond. King George has received a groat number of congratulatory telegrams from all parts of the world. His Majesty sent replies by wireless to messages received from travellers on the high seas. (Received May 26, I a.m.) LONDON, May 25. Empire Day was less generally celebrated than usual, many patriotic festivities being postponed till the Coronation. IN CANADA. I * OTTAWA, May 25. Empire Day was celebrated in Canada. Sports were the chief attraction. TWO ALTERNATIVES. MELBOURNE, May 25. In a speech on Empire Day Mr Deakin declared that there were two alternatives to adopt, on© of which was the creation of a worldwide tribunal to enforce its decrees in all countries. If that was not possible, he said, to prevent the Empire tumbling in ruins we must depend upon ourselves, at tho cost of war. A complete and efficient system of defence, declared Mr Deakin, was necessary for onr existence.
