THE TERRITORIALS
LAST SEVEN DAYS MANY YET TO REGISTER. There are only seven full days left iu which persons between tho ages of fourteen and twenty-one may register under tho new defence scheme, and in,, the* AVellington district alone it is estimated that there are still between .five and six thousand youths who have not handed in their, names. It is antici* pated that there will bo a groat rush next week, as many youths seem to bff putting it off until the last moment. A prominent officer, in discussing the matter with a “Times ” reporter yesterday, said the opinion seemed to prevail that if a person were fined for not registering that was an end of the matter, as through paying tho'fino ho escaped service. It was pointed out that such was quite an erroneous idea. If a fine were imposed for failure to register, the defence authorities could at dace place the person concerned on tho roll and serve him with a notice to parade, and further fines could bo inflicted for failure to - take- the oath and for non-attendance on parade. In fair, ness to those who had voluntarily registered it would bo imperative to ho strict with defaulters, otherwise there would he grave dissatisfaction on tha part of tho public. Registration ceases at 7 p.m. oy June 2nd.
