THE OLD DOCK SITE

FOR WAREHOUSES PROPOSAL TO FILL UP THE AREA. Memories of the controversy which raged over the construction of jtlre dock at Clyde quay were revived for a brief space at the meeting of the Harbour Board last night, when a'subcommittee recommended the board to instruct the engineer to prepare estimates of tbe cost of construction of a wall across the dock entrance and of repairing the adjoining sea wall. The chairman was about to put the motion for adoption, of the recommendation, when one or two members asked what the effect would ba. Mr Fletcher said that the adjoining sea wall would have to ho repaired in any case, as it was now falling to piece's. It" was the desire of the committee to make come use of the vacant space that should have been occupied by the dock, but before this could be done the wall across the entrance must, be built. His idea was to build the wall, fili the place up and then the board would have a very valuable asset, for instead of. bavin"’ a dock that would bo an incubus they Aright be in the position of having .sonic fine warehouses on the site within n few years. In any case, the motion was only to authorise the preparation of an estimate, and would _ not bind the board to apv further action. “Will the land pay for the expense over tire dock?” asked a member. “It will pay for half a dozen docks, was the chairman’s reply. The recommendation was adopted.
