OUTBREAKS OF FIRE
PRESS ASSOCIATION. ■ WESTPORT, Slay -23. Collins's music and fancy goods depot, •part of a largo block of Ouiioiags, -was gutted by fire at 2.30 this morning. An explosion .of fireworks iu the stock aroused the neighbours. The stock was destroyed by fire and water, but the building was .saved. The insurance on the stock was J 6400. The fire may have been caused by a spirit lamp accidentally left burning. GISBORNE, May 23. An eight-roomed house at Waerengaokuri, owned and occupied by Mr Cariyon, sheep farmer, was destroyed by fire : Tho insurance on the house was .&4W> in the Victoria office. The furniture was not.insured. • . t . EEEFTON, May 23. The first fin* for four years occurred this morning, when Wills and Co/e largo drapery and grocery store on tho Buller road was burned to the ground., Owing to the economy exercised in regard to water, due to the dry \veather, the water was slow, in coming. The adjoining dwelling was saved. The loss is heavy, as the firm was carrying .£7OOO worth of stock, and was insuied for .£IBOO only—ilSOO each_ in the Standard, South British, New Zealand, Victoria, Norwich Union, ,and Phoenix'; The fire brigade received a call at 9.19 o'clock last night to No. 15, Rolleston Street, where an outbreak was discovered in a four-roomed house occupied by Mr McCauley and owned by Mr J. W. Eyans. Two rooms and the passage were. badly damaged by fire, and the remainder of the house suffered from heat and smoke. Th© occupants of the house were away. The cause of the outbreak could not be ascertained*
