FRENCH WARSHIP KERSAINT

CIVIC RECEPTION. A reception was given to Commander Tieroelin, of the Trench warship Eersaint. now in port, in the Town Hall on Saturday morning by the Mayor (Mr T. M. Wiilord, M.F.), city councillors and members of the Harbour Hoard. Mr dames Macintosh, Consul for France, introduced the visitor. On behalf of the city the Mayor welcomed the commander, his officers; and men to 'Wellington, and wished them a pleasant sojourn. Mr C. W. Jones, in the absence of the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr •R. Fletcher) extended full hospitality on behalf of the board. Speaking in good English, Commander Tiercelin thanked the'Mayor, councillors, and Harbour Board for the kind welcome extended. His last visit to New Zealand was in 1888, two years after the Tarawera eruption. He was then a midshipman. He had many pleasant memories of that visit. He had come back with white hairs, but with the same pleasure. (Applause)'. The party . subsequently inspected the Town Hall, the city organist (Mr Maughan Barnett) playing La Marseillaise, the Nationa 1 Anthem of France. The Mayor, councillors, and members of the Harbour Board will return the visit at 10.15 a.m. to-day. .
