VICTORIAN STATE COAL MINE
REPORT OP THE COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE, December 23.
The Select Committee’s report on the Victorian State Coal Mine at Powlett river states that the area already proved contains 5,000,000 tons. Until the development discloses that a much greater quantity is available, the present conditions of working the mine for the railways and other Government departments, and selling slack coal only, had hotter be continued.
The report recommends the immediate transfer of the management to the Railway Commissioners, and the thorough equipment and development of the mine, so as to permit during an emergency of double or treble the normal output. This is important in the event of strikes, and also to act as a regulator of the price of Newcastle coal.
A searching inquiry into the administration of the Mines Department is suggested, the evidence having disclosed that there was a complete disregard of commercial methods and a waste of public funds during the emergency period consequent on the Newcastle strike..
