GENERAL NEWS. The following tournaments of interest to Wellington players commence on Mondav New Zealand championships, at Blenheim; Wellington handicaps, at Day's Bay; Hastings championships and handicaps, a.t Hastings - . , Quinnell and Stvainson, two players well known in Wellington, are in a match-winning humour an Auckland this season. la the ecnioT fixture. West End v. Darnell, the pair won the match for their club (W.E.) by their will against Goldsmith and Wimps-oii, in the men's doubles, 5-6,. 6—l, 8-6. Commenting on this particular rubier an Auckland exchange gives great credit to Quinnell and Swaihson, tho latter of whom is a player of the dashing order, and great things are expected of him when h-o strikes his best form.

The Dannevirke tournament dates have been altered to January IV’th, IStn, 'and 19th, so as not to clash with tho Wellington provincial championship tournament, to be hold at Masterton on January 21st, 23rd, and 24tii. The two clubs (Dannevirke and Masterton) have been wrangling for years over the Question of dateis, and it is satisfactory to note that this year players will be able to attend both tournaments. The Dannevirke meeting concludes on January ,19th, so that there will be a full day to, get to Masterton. The suburban contingent (F. J. Cornell, T. L. Ward, A. G. Duncan. F. O, Austin) leave by the midnight express for Hastings, wncre they are competing in tine championship and handicap tournament. Duncan and Austin brealcTheir .journey, at Pahiatua on their return, as they have entered for the popular !tournament, of the Bush District Club, decided on January 2nd and 3rd. The quartette are in good form, and doubtless a. few trophies will find , their way to W eUin-gton as a result of their efforts.

E. Salmond (Wellington) is another local player nnablo to attend the New Zealand championships. Ho has been spending a- week's furlough, at Muntai, and as he was previously in good form with tho racquet would probably : have dope well at Blenheim. Results of inter-ciuh matches in Auckland last Saturday• First Grade: Eden and Epsom defeated Auckland, 17 sets to 1; West End defeated Parnell, 10 sets to 8. • ■ Second Grade: Devonport defeated Mt. Albert, 17 sets to 1; llemuera defeated Onehunga, 11 sets to 7. Third Grade: Otahuhu defeated University, 13 sets to 5.

F. Eller (Wellington) purposes spending the Christmas week in Wanganui, consequently trill not be a competitor at the local handicap tournament at Day s Bay. For various x-easons tho .following players, in addition to Eller, will not attend the meeting: Clarke, Wright, Jones, Austin, Duncan, Cornell, Callender, Kean, McLean, and Paterson. These include most of those who contested the semi-finals and finals of the men’s handicap singles and doubles at tho last New Kear tournament. Winners at the last Handicap tournament held under the auspices of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association (Day’s Bay, January Ist and 2nd) : —Men’s handicap singles, P. B. Wrightladies’ handicap singles. Miss D. Atmore; men’s handicap doubles, C. A. Jeffrey and F. A. Lewis; ladies’ handicap doubles. Misses V, Onrtis and L. Walters; combined handicap doubles, 11. Fathers and Miss Printzeji. The inter-club competitions which have been suspended until January 28th are in tho fallowing position as far as leading teams are concerned:— , Men’s—A grade, Thorndon; B grade, Petone; C grade. Brougham Hill 1. and Khandallah; D grade, Jolmsonville. Ladies’—A grade, won ,by Thorndon; B grade, Petone; C grade. Khandallah and St. John’s.
