Dr Frederick Cook, in an article in the " Hampton Magazine/* confesses that he does not know whether he reached tho North Pol© or not.
Dr Cook claimed to have reached the Pole on April 21st, 1908. Ho reached Lerwick, in tho Shetland Islands, on hio return’ in September last year. His story was ~at first accepted without dissent, but when just afterwards Commander Peary came back from the icy wastes and claimed to have accomplished the same feat, seeing no sign of a: previous visitor. Cook’s prestige was dealt a blow that has proved' so far irretrievable. ,'
