USE OF WATER POWER

(To the Editor "N.Z. Times.”) Sir.—Would you kindly allow me the use of your columns to ventilate one of the greatest questions that has ever arisen in this Dominion? We all know that oiir laxity in tho past with regard to our land and railways has left ua a burden that will take ns a long time to rectify. Now is tho time to organise in regard to the harnessing of our Jakes and rivers. Such a force! , Think of it and its potentialities. Why, at the very thought of it,-to this land of ours, this Dominion, what vistas arise in trade, commerce, and of everything that goes to make ’a great country! For bear in mind that we are hero handicapped, and it is only by utilising the enormous power going to waste that this country can take its proper place in the nations of the world. That should be our ideal—an ideal not to be polluted by either municipal or private enterprise. Now, sir, with regard to organisation I propose to form a North. Island Water-power League, with branches all qver the North Island, with, headquarters at Palmerston North (I am a Palmerstonian), as it is , the most centrally situated. But ff anyone can suggest a- better, by all means lets us have it. And it is to be hoped that this League will be free , from all party-so that the whole of our political influence can be brought to bear on any Government that .may be in power and see to it that it is the most comprehensive scheme for the good of all. My most earnest hope is that this letter may. arouse tho people from their apathy to this most momentous question of all.—l am, etc., JAMES PINKERTON. Palmerston, November 30th.
