REQUEST FOR FREE RIDES

SHOULD SOCIAL WOEKEES EECEIVE CONCESSIONS. ( SPECIAL, TO THE “ ITHES." CHBISTCHUKCH, November 22. The Christchurch Tramway Board considered a request from the St. John Ammilance Brigade that - members' of - the brigade when in uniform or wearing badges and upon ambulance duty should be allowed to travel free on the trams. Mr G. T. Booth moved' that the request should be granted. Mr C. M. Gray, however, strongly opposed the granting of the request. He said it seemed to him a paltry thing for the members of the brigade to ask the board to relieve them of the payment of twopence or threepence; There were plenty of organised social workers in Christchurch who were doing good work, such as the District Nurse and the Salvation Army, who received no concessions, and he saw no reason why the Ambulance Brigade should be made: an exception. He yielded to no man in his admiration for the work the brigade was doing but ho could not overlook the fact that it was not the only body whoso claims might have to be considered. Mr S. A. Staples suggested that if re- " Dig kind were granted everyone in Christchurch might some day be riding free. . Mr A. W. Beaven moved as an amendment that the general manager should be asked to ascertain what would bo involved in granting the request. Mr‘Booth withdrew his motion, and the amendment was carried.
