FIRE AT WHITELEY'S
PROMPT ACTION AVERTS SERIOUS DISASTER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. . . . ' LONDON, March 14. At Whiteley's great emporium there ■was a narrow escape from a serious calamity by fire. 'The closing of the iron doors bad the effect of confining the fire to one department, which, was destroyed. Beyond that little damage was done. When the fire was discovered the customers on the premises and 4000 assistants were removed without confusion. A dozen firemen were overcome by smoke, and had to be taken to the hospital.
