The delightful weather and smooth sea prevailing on Saturday resulted in the wholesale launching of sailing and rowing craft in Petone waters. Several competitions were decided, including one for the Petone Rowing Club’s Junior Sculls. This was won with comparative ease. The, whole of the Heretaunga Club’s fleet took part in a handicap race, the course being around “the gap” and Rocky Point buoy and home. The scratch boats were Bittle and McDonald’s Buna and 1 Mr Hartley’s Spray. The conditions proved well to the Eking of the latter craft, which led its opponent over the whole course and won the race by about four - minutes. Mr Jenkins’s Waiwetn finished third. PETONE FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Petone Football Club will be held to-night. The report mentions that the senior team occupied second place in the championship, and also won the Benefit Oup by 9 points to S. This, says the report, must be considered very satisfactory when we consider the yoatbfulness of the team. The team was unfortunate in losing so early in the season the services of AI. Ryan. With the splendid material which is available for the doming season the committee confidently hope that the championship will again come to Petone this year. The junior team has once more shown its value to the club as a preparatory training ground for tbo. senior team. . This was particularly noticeable last year, as many of the juniors when promoted to the senior team did excellent work. The third class also had a most successful year and they showed their loyalty to the, dub by fhmis'hing the junior team with their best players without murmuring. While this excellent spirit remains tbo club has nothing to fear. The fourth class team during the past year has not been so successful as usual, but this has been due in a great measure to the amount of travelling the team has had to do. The fifth class team has an excellent, record, hut they were unfortunate in not having tho championship awarded to them, owing to the injudicious conduct of one of their members. This was owing to no fault on the part of their coach or the management , committee, who were put to considerable trouble on account of the - member alluded to. Air A. W. Gyles, an employee of the Hutt Valley Hardware Company and step-son of Air John Ward, is reported- to have effected tho rescue of a drowning lad from tho Hutt river in a plucky manner on Tuesday last. Anniversary services w r ore held at the Petone Methodist Church yesterday. The congregations throughout the day were large. A strong juvenjlo choir, trained by Air Ackroyd,

supplied tbo greater portion of the choral part" of tho services. ‘ The church was prettily decorated. 1 The liov. Ai. Bowden Harris was tho preacher. ' Air E. A. Connelly’s friends are giving a concert in Bellevue Gardens tonight in the interests of his candidature for the “Times” tour. A meeting of the committee Of the Lower Hart Ratopapcrs’ Association was held on Saturday night. It was decided to invite all intending members to attend a general meeting on Friday night. Tho monthly open meeting of the Hutt No-licensc League will be held in St. Augustine’s Hall, Petohe, tonight at 8 o’clock. The Rev. B. F. Uothwoil. president. wdll be the speaker. Air IV. H. Russell is definitely in tho field as a candidate for tho Lower Hutt Alayoralty in opposition to Air George London. Asked on Saturday whether lie intended standing, AllBaldwin said he had not definitely decided. It- is not yet certain whether or not Air AlcEwan will be opposed for tho Petone Alayoralty.
