The death of Mr John Macallan Swan, E.A., was annoimoed in. a Press Assooia tion cable' message from London’ last' nights Mr Swan, who was bom at Old Brentford, studied at the Worcester School of Art and the Lambeth Art School, subsequently concluding his , artistic studies on the Continent. In 1 1881 he was elected a member of the Butch Water -Colour Society, and received honourable mention at the Paris Salon in the following year. Other Continental honours were won during the next few years. His first appearance at the Royal Academy was in 1878, when, ho exhibited scan© figure and animal pictures. He has also been an exhibitor at Grosvenor Gallery and New Gallery. In 1891 he became an .Associate of the Royal Academy, the greater honour being conferred upon him in 1905. A mother who was summoned at Kingston for not sending her child to school was said to work until 8 p.m. daily as a scrubber in the local infirmary, and to work from the time she returned home until 1 or 2 a.m. at washing.
