BUSINESS OF THE COUNCIL. At the meeting of Victoria College Council last night, . ‘Mr J. Graham, M.P., presided, and tho members present were Messrs H. F. Voh Ilaast, ■H. H. Ostler, C. Wilson, E. I). - -Bell, J. G. W. Aitken, C. Watson, AV, Ji. Quick, A. T, Magimiity, and Dr C. ; P. Knight. . Tno accounts showed that payments required to bo authorised comprised £655 in salaries,- £350 I6s .8d on account of the new wing, and .£27 17s 7d on general items, a total of: <£lolo, which left a balance of .£697 to credit of the general account. In addition, there were deixisits totalling £3350.; It was explained, by the chairman that £1633 had been received on account of the new building, being £IOOO subsidy from tho Government, and £633 in subscriptions, while sums amounting to £l4O were still to come in.

Tho Education Department intimated that the Government was prepared to subsidies the gift of £IOO for equipping the physios laboratory, at the rate of ,£1 for dil. It was decided'to .thank the Government for its subsidy. Professor Daby reported that further apparatus had been ordered for tho laboratory. It was decided to request' the finance committee to draw up a general iul« dealing with fees paid by candidates, who were, for some satisfactory reason, unable to sit for the examination. In submitting tho library committee’s report, which was adopted, the chairman (Mr AViloqn) mentioned that the library was now something , worth having, for it contained 7000 books. Suggestions were contained In the report for preventing overlapping in the purchase of periodicals, and to slightly cut down tho annual orders, so as lo keep the total yearly expenditure within JB2OO. The total ex 7 penditnre to dat-o upon the library bad been .£3103. Dr Knight having resigned from tho lib ram- committee, owing to inability to attend' tbo meetings, tho- Itev. W. A. Evans was appointed in his place. The re-engagement of to piofessors appointed last year was authorised, with tho exception of the assistant in biology, at a salary of, ,£3O, who will be nominated by Professor Kirk. .
