ASCENT OF MOUNT RUAPEHU

OHAKIJNE, February 7. A number of ladies and gentlemen made a successful ascent of Mount Euapehu yesterday." The party consisted of Mr and Mrs J. K, Lowe, and Miss Carmody, of Ohakuno, Mr and Mrs A. R, Bryce, of Marton, and Mrs Crisp, of Rangataua. The ascent took about seven hours to accomplish, but the view from the highest peak more than repaid tho climbers, as tho towns of Ohakuno. Ractihi. Horopito, and Rangataua could be seen, in addition to the very interesting country adjacent. The lake on tho top of the mountain appeared to be boiling in tho middle, and presented a weird sight. The return journev was most enjoyable, as the party •were able to toboggan down the side of the mountain on sacks for a distance of about two miles, tho Ladies and gentlemen sitting in file on one long sack, and the sensation was most exhilarating, Tho return journey took about five hours.
