MUSIC EXAMINATIONS

SUGGESTIONS PROM MELBOURNE. PEESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, January 27. At the meeting of the University Senate to-day, tho Music Committee presented a report, recommending that, iiollowing a suggestion from Dr Bradshaw, the statute dealing with the entrance or matriculation examination in music be added to by requiring candidates to ehow satisfactory knowledge of harmony. Another recommendation (as amended before adoption) was that the following reply bo sent to the University of Melbourne, in answer to a letter received from its Registrar:—"Senate regret that whilst it is in sympathy with the principle of co-operation in examinations in music in the Commonwealth, it can for the present give no definite expression of opinion as to tho conduct of suoh examinations by the University of Melbourne bo far as they relate to NewZealand." The committee reported that tho recess committee on music was not prepared as yet to report to the senate as to'what encouragement the affiliated colleges are prepared to give towards the establishment of a Conserratorium of Music in New Zealand, and it asked leave to report at the next annual meeting of the senate, the music committee of the present session to be the next recess committee on music.
