WANGANUI TRIUMPHS

» . WELLINGTON BOWING ASSOCIATION'S BEGATTA. VISITING CREWS GAIN CHIEF HONOURS, They came; they rowed; they conquered. Port Nicholson oarsmen got badly left by visitors from North and South on Saturday. Pour firsts went to Wanganui, three to Picton, and two to Chtistchuroh. Homo teams were the runners-up in five events. The successes of the Wanganuites vrere very popular, whilst the plucky rowing of the Picton orews won plaudits and golden opinions for„tho mon of the Sounds. Sea enough, with a moderate southerly behind it, to remind oarsmen that they had here no placid river's reach to skim, and a blue sky (from the third raoe onwards) overhead constituted the weather conditions. The freshening breeze was producing something of a swell when the second race (the big event of the day) was rowed, the stretch across Evans Bay entrance discomfiting the rowers somewhat, but thereafter tho breeze fel', ruffling the course sufficiently to try the stamina of oarsmen and prevent any records being broken, but not to produce any unduo interference. The. quality of the racing was very variable, but a sufficient number of exciting bouts were witnessed to prevent proceedings from palling on the spectators, of whom, on i board the s.s. Admiral (which followed I the races) and on the Taranaki street wharf, there were some five hundred or more. The senior pairs (won by Sharpe and Drew, Wanganui), was perhaps tho most interesting raoe of the day, not only on account of t its being, well contested, but because'of the associations recalled by the names of the contestants. Little and Heffer, the Star Club's representatives (who had already gone over tho two mile course, in the senior fours, / finishing third), rowed a plucky race, and wero only beaten by half /a' length. The veteran Christchurch pair, O'Brien and Pry, held a very good position for thefirst mile, .but could not-last. The senior and junior fours and the.youths' fours wero all races well worth watching. - The senior sculls was the least satisfac-

a mile by Stars. Then Christchiircß Union drew into second place, that! order being maintained to the post, where I a length and a half separated the two boats. Stars had fallen half a dozen lengths behind, an equal distance separating them and Picton. The rowing of the winning crew was olean and finished.
