RIFLE-SHOOTING

SATURDAY'S COMPETITIONS. SOME. FINE SCORES. As the season advances the standard of markmanship at tho Trentham ranges improves each week; and to obtain top position among the numerous competitors is now a great honour, so proficient have many of our local men become. For the last two Saturdays 68 oiit of a possible 70 has been the "main, ' and while this was only reached by one man on Saturday week—Rifleman W. G. Tarr, Ivarori—the eamo total was made by two competitors last Saturday afternoon, AV. Judd. of the Karori Club, and Sergeant Dodd, of the City Rifles, each registering that total. Judd's G 8 will probably be considered the most meritorious performance for two reasons. The first, that ho got a possible at 200 vards, and the second, that it. was his first shoot this season. Judd used a B.S.A aperture sight for the first tune and fired w-ith the discarded G.B. ammunition, a brand which many marksmen refuse to use. . . W. Judd's Targets.

Sergeant Dead got within one- of tho possible at both the 200 and 600 yards i-ranges. "All buts" at 200 ymds were also scored by Rifleman J. Burns and J \. C. Maisev of the Karori Club. D-odd's 3'l was the best individual score at COO yards, but 33 was put on by Rifle- I man W. Judd and A. T. Fellows (Ivarori Club). Lanee-Corporal Findlay, of the I Post and Telegraph Rifles, put on 31 at 500 vards. Some good scores were made | by ii Class competitors; in fact, some of the juniors arc putting their more I experienced rivals to shame every Saturday afternoon. Private Russell, of the Hiitt Vallev Rifles, made 6-1 out of 70—32 at 200 vards and 32 at 500 yards, while Private" Hunt, of the Post and Telegraph Rifles, made 63—33 and 30 over the same ranges. ~.-■' Wellington marksmen have . improved out of sight " this season, and if some of the best men can be indue:d to,shoot at the forthcoming championship gathei--ing they should give a very good account of themselves. It is high time the Belt, was won by, some local competitor.. Besides tho Ballinger Brothers - the belt ho; onlv onco been won by. a Wellington marksman. That was in-1880,. when. P.O. Williams,'of the Wellington Navale, was awarded championship honours. Now that so many 'Wellington enthusiasts toko part in the weekly shoots, and seeing also that they have the odvantage'of practising.on the range where tho championship is fought out. Wellington should be once again looked to' to carry off the championship. The new aperture-sights are, no doubt, a big lactor in the making of high scores at Trentham this season. , They are no-, doubtedly revolutionising shooting, and marksmen .'should, not bo at.all surprised if"'the bull's-eye is , reduced m size at some of the ranges in the near future. Tin's is more likely- to bo the case at 500 and 800 yards, and no doubt tho question will receive attention by tho Bisley authorities before, long. There were 243 competitors- on the range on Saturday., Lieutenant Roacao being in charge. The wind was not very baffling, and did not vary to more than about three degrees left-at-600 yards. WELLINGTON HIGHLAND RIFLES. Competition for company belt, McDiaimid Junior Cup, Bal.Mntyne & lueld . trophy presented by W. H. lisdall, Ltd. First match for three monthly competition. v , ~ Privlvtes Eves and McLean topped the seniors w-ith a handy 61, made exactly in tho same manner. This shoot completes the. short range ■ shooting for the company belt; three more, matches to, go, at ranges 800yds' to' IOOOj-ds.', ;
