PLUNKET SHIELD CHALLENGE. PBEBS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, January 13. The secretary of tho Auckland Oricket Association has received advice that the Hawke's Bay Association intends challenging Auckland for tho Plunket Shield, the match to be played some time in February. ' TEACHERS AT PLAY. : .WIN FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. It .was proposed to play a oricket match at tho Basin Reserve yesterday between the New South Wales visiting teachers and representatives of the profession in the Dominion. Owing to various causes it was found impracticaile to organise .the New Zealand eleven in time, so that the intercolonial representative nature of tho contest had to be dropped. A gam© of one innings each was played between She visitors, assisted by a couple of local players, and a team. consisting_ of members of tho teaching profession here, helped by several Wellington rwiUow-wielders. The visiting combination proved' far too superior, winning an enjoyable contest by 151 cons. The Wellington team batted first, and made a fair showing, compiling ISO before they were all disposed of. Pringlo was top-scorer with 31. Shepherd, of Auckland, made 22,' while Dr Foster, the Victoria College crack; contributed 18 not out. Dind, another Saturday player, was responsible for 19. •ATtmn.-n was the most successful bowler, capturing five wickets at a cost of 65 runs. The visitors completely overshadowed ■the batting effort of their opponents, ,*he first two batsmen, Rose and McMnllmij knocking up 138 runs in an home without being separated. Rose did not remain long after the afternoon tea adjournment, being run out with 88 to his credit. MoMullen, who, by the way, plays for Burwood in the Sydney first-grade competition, compiled 103 before he was cangbt behind tho wickets by Broadziak. Except for a chance to Hanifey in the slips at 90, his effort was a ohanceless and good one, his placing being excellent. With the dismissal of these two the remainder of the side did not give much trouble, the innings closing just on the call of time for 281 runs. Foster made a couple of splendid catches in the out-field, disposing of Smith (who also plays in Sydney first grade cricket) and O'Shea. Fanning 'and Dempsey were the only ones able to dismiss their opponents. Though palpably tired, tho former took four wickets for 66, while Dempsey's figures were a little better—five wickets for 60.
