THE WOODPULP DEMAND.
- It is certain that tho demand for wood for the making of pulp will have a 'great influence on tho timber market in tire future, and the belief is general that in a short time whitewood. will become dearer than redwood (says the “Timber Trades Journal”). The utilisation of wood for the making of paper is reaching, inconceivable dimensions, and huge forests are -being used up daily to supply the material on which to print books, ' newspapers, and other ephemeral productions. Again, owners of forests find that wood fetches a higher price for pulping purposes than when sold as timber, and a young forest grown quickly for the pulp maker is found to be • a better investment than waiting for the tedious growth of the more mature timber. Unless some substitute be found for woodpulp for paper making, the increasing drain on the world's forests cannot fail but to force up the prices of whitewood of every description.
