In 1870 the total of the votes for primary, secondary, and higher education was only .£96,000; in 1900 it had reached <£8,160,000: for the year 1909 ■ it was <£10,960,000; and for the year 1910 it will exceed <£11,20-1,000. .By far tho greater proportion of this gigantic vote goes to primary schools, but during the last legislative period the annual;- amount devoted to higher education was increased by dCIO.QOO, apart from non-recurring expenditure amounting to about .£40,000 in all, during a period'of four years for new buildings and appliances. During the same legislative period , the annual votes for secondary education increased by .£IBO,OOO.
