SWIMMING
At Te Aro baths last, night, the Wellington Club decided its first race for “Jl’- grade swimmers, over a fifty yards course. A large number of competitors came forward, and the racing Was dose and interesting. Result First heat— W. H. Pollock (7seo), 1; H. Silver (lOsec), and E. Donovan (13sec), dead heat, 3. Also started —W. H. Ellis (1-lsoc), A. Bowman (lOsec), J. Gosling (lOsec), G. Crawford (3seo), T. Hall (Csc-c). Time, 38sec. Second heat—B. Bussell (9-co), 1; W. Baumgart (Ssc-c), 2; W. Wilson (Ssec), 3. Also started—G. Saunders,(7sec), F. Dohmey (7-sec), W. G. Morpeth (7see), L. Silver (Gsec). Time, 36 2-5 sec. Third heat—.i. Wareham (osec), 1; 11. Alexander (2b£-c), 2; ' W. The tie will bo swum off on Wednesday next. The tie between W. AVilson and B. O’Neill in the 220yds Kieran Memorial Handicap, at the Y.M.C.A. Club’s carnival on Saturday last, was decided last evening. Both competitors left the mark together, and *at the end' of the first lap (50yds), O’Neill , held a slight advantage. At the ICOyds mark, both were even, and over the next fifty yards remained on almost equal terms. When 200yds had been covered, O’Neill ;was leading by; n yard, and Wilson, whoso lack of condition had told its tide, gave up; and O’Neill finished the remainder of the journey alone.
