EXAMINATIONS

Sir,—l trust your correspondent "A Beginner'' will pardon me for pointing out that ho has made the very common mistake of judging an issue hy a few remarks torn from their context. Tho sentences lie uses a® Jus text were used by mo in a specific; connection, viz., in dealing with one method of determining the qualifications of teachers. Surely no ono thinks that those who oppose our examination system wish to eliminate all examining or testing. I have always been careful to state what seems to me tho proper place and function of examination in a national system of education. The third paragraph from the end of your contributor’s letter is the beet reply to his criticism of what I actually said, though not, of course, with what he credits mo with saying.—l am, etc., T. A.
