RECENT FIRE IN ATHENS
FOREIGN SAILORS TAKE CHARGE OF AFFAIRS. LOCAL OFFICIALS FEEL HURT. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. ATHENS, January 10. Tbo fire at the Royal Palace ■on the Greek Christmas Eve did damage to the extent of £IOO,OOO. Four hundred British sailors who landed to assist in the salvage work wore accompanied by a hundred armed marines, and carried the British flag. An armed escort also accompanied the Russian sailors.
The force pushed through tho Greek troops, took up a front position, and mounted guard over tho art treasures rescued from tho building. The Greek officers protested against being summarily, supplanted, and tbo Athens papers are angry. Tho Premier explains that tho escort was in accordance with tho usual practice, but the subject is causing irritation.
