Tailhado however, having objected to the use of that weapon, pistols were chosen. Ibe conditions were severe e i lou shots to be fired by each at a distance of twenty-five yards. ... The meeting took place this morning at the Pare dos Princes. At the first word of command, M. Urbam Gohier fired, while his antagonist -stood quiet, without using his weapon. At the second word of command, neither of the men fired. The seconds, after a short consultation, brought the antagonists together, and thoy cordially shook hands. It may be mentioned also that tbe use of the sword bad been declined after a formal certificate had been drawn up by a doctor. M. Tailhade then said to his opponent: — ‘ ‘A few minutes before I compelled you to fight with a weapon that you had not chosen, and for that reason I abstained from firing." M. Gohier listened with bared bead to the explanation, and showed that he appreciated his antagonist’s chivalry. M. Tailhado then added :—“Let us forget the article, and be friends again, as we were in. the past!” This brought about a thorough reconciliation, in the course of which M. Tailhade showed his emotional Southern character by giving M. Gohier a vigorous kiss of friendship.
