SWIMMING

Y.M.C.A. CLUB'S CARNIVAL. A SPLENDID PROGRAMME. The sixth annual Carnival of the Y.M.C.A. Amateur Swimming Club took place at To Aro baths oa Saturday afternoon, in splendid weather, and before a large attendance ' of spectators. A splendid programme Was submitted, and the numerous events were contested by a large number of competitors. In most of the races the finishes were exceedingly close, reflecting great credit on the handieapper, Mr A A. Somerville. The 50yds Y.M.C.A. Handicap served to sho\c that J. H. Mliwby is as' speedy as ever, despite lack of training. He swam splendidly, and his time for the distanoo must have been in the vicinity of 29sec. The winner turned up in R. A. Parton (12sec), .who defeated .Mawby. by a small margin, "W. L. Wilson (lOsec) being a good third.

The principal event on tho programme was the 50yds President's Handicap, which attracted a large field, and .was decided in four, heats. Chief interest centred in the fourth heat, in which the majority of the contestants were on the scratch mark. Two of these (C; V. Fordhum and G. Patterson) filled second and third pla'ces respectively,' tho winner being W. Wilson, whose time was 31 1-3 sec. The diving competition was. closely contested, E. Nelson, C. Mooro and G. Neal diving off in the final, and being placed by the judge in that order. Nelson's dives were particularly neat, and an improvement on lust year's form. C. Mbore was not at his best, and was lucky to defeat Neal, who dived well up to hi.utiual standard. The ICOyds and 220yds handicaps were well contested, the latter resulting lu a tie between W. Wilson (32sec) and 13. O'Neill (32scc), with C. M. Wlu-d (2-fecc) close tip third. Ward swam a splenuVi race, and must have broken 3min„ The tie will be decided at Te Aro baths on Wednesday next. The comic •"Dreadriclight" event, organised by. Mr G. P. Hauua, was high))amusing, >Sad will boar repetition. Mr T. . Shields's celebrated "fish" was also in evidence, and again provoked much laughter. The- following were the officials for the meeting:—Juages: Messrs A. A. Sonieryille, H. W. Dyson and C. A.
