MAGISTRATE'S COURT
SATURDAY, JANUARY 8. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) Edward Donovan denied that ho was an habitual drunkard. He had been arrested whilst in a state of intoxication in Manners street on , the previous day. As it was shown that ho was an old offender with many previous convictions recorded against hiin he was‘sent to the inebriates 5 institution on Pakatoa Island for twelv© months. Two first offenders who were guilty of drunkenness, and who were on bail, were fined IQs each, and fines of 5s each were imposed upon two others who had not previously been • before the Court; '• the alternative in each case was twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. . Charles Hall, who had previous convictions for intemperance, was fined 10s, or forty-eight hours’ jmpri- • sommont. Michael Farrington was ordered to pay 7s per week for the- maintenance of his illegitimate child. Edward Grove pleaded 'guilty to charges of having procured liquor and of having been helplessly drunk during the currency of a prohibition- order taken out against him. -For his drunkenness he was fined 17s 6d, the charge for his medical treatment, and for the other offences he was fined 40s, with costs los, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.
