THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
Speaking at the social tendered to Mr James Paget, at Scarborough, on Wednesday evening last, Mr A. MoFarlane, chairman. of directors of the Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company, said, in reference to the dairy industry to-day, that dairy fanners were awakening to the, fact that scientific methods must bo introduced in order to obtain from their herds the best that was in them. In this connection the farmer had received valuable assistance from the testing apparatus, which enabled him to weed out the poor cows from his herd, and keep only those returning a profit. All farmers knew that there were cows in every .herd at one time that: were not worth the grass they consumed. Scientific culling had worked wonders, and the dairy, herds of the Dominion were reaching a high standard from a milkproducing point of view. The value of butter exported from the Dominion last year was only exceeded by wool and mutton, and ho confidently anticipated
that it would, in the coming vear. run into second place. The whole of the output of the Ballanoe company this season had reached first grade, the last consignment reaching 91. The prosperity of Pahiatua, concluded Mr MoFarlane, could be traced to the cow, and the dairy farmers in the district were dairying on proper lines by keeping only the bast of butter-producing cows.
