THE PLUNKET SHIELD
AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. mass AssociATxoif. AUCKLAND, January 7. Ideal cricket weather, an easy wioket, and an outfield like a billiard table, were the conditions this morning at Victoria Bark,, when the Auckland v. Canterbury .cricket match for the Blanket Shield was commenced. Reese won the toss for Canterbury and sent Auckland into tiho field. Canterbury, however, failed to gain any advantage by the first use of the wicket, being disposed of for the peer score of liO. C. Ohfie and A. M. Howden were the destroying elements. The Auckland fielding was also brilliant, and thus the total was kept down. The local eleven went to the wickets, and at the close of the day had made ail for the loss of nine wickets, thu? being 61 in the lead with one wicket to fall. Orchard: secured most of the Auckland wickets. Olifie secured the best bowling average—four wickets for 27. The uncertainty of cricket was exemplified in this player, many thinking prior to the match that he should bo omitted from the team. The match is neither won nor lost yet, for anything may happen, and Auckland's }ead cannot be said to be overwhelming. Scores t CANTERBURY.—First Innings. D.
