Nows Has been received tbat the liner' Norse Prince has been abandoned on fire off Plancon Head, at the Ifibmd of Ascension. The vessel was valued at £77,000, and the cargo at £IOO,OOO. The Norse Prince was one of the extensive fleet of the Prince Line, with headquarters at Newcastle-on-Tyno. She was a steel screw vessel of 6611 tons register, with a carrying capacity of* 9500 torfaTand was engaged in the trade from Antwerp and London to the River Plate, returning to the United Kingdom. She was built a little over two years ago by the Palmer Shipbuilding Company of Newcastle. Ascension Island lies about 750 miles north-west of St, Helena, in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, and is a victualling station for the British African Squadron. ; The island is of volcanic origin, and Groen Mountain rises to a height of 2820 feet. It is almost destitudo o! vegetation, but the climate is temperate and healthy. The population is under 3CO. The island was so named from the fact that it was discovered on Ascension Day, 1501, by the Portuguese. Britain took possession of it in 1815.
