A DESPERATE PRISONER

PBESS ASSOCIATION. CHKISTCHTJECH, January 6. Yesterday evening* a . strongly built young man was noticed to be behaving in a peculiar manner on the platform of the Lyttelton railway station, and was arre3ted. H© went quietly to the police Station, but when inside he threw himself on. the floor and struggled vigorously with a constable. Ho put his hand in his shirt and pulled out a revolver, which was wrapped up in a handkerchief, and succeeded in placing the muzzle, still covered with the handkerchief, in his mouth.. The constable pulled the revolver away, and, with thie assistance of another constable, got it away from the prisoner. The weapon was loaded in five chambers, and apparently the man's life was saved by the handkerchief, which had become jammed under the hammer,. After losing possession of the firearm tho man quietened down and asked for a drink. He was placed in a cell and examined this morning for lunacy.
