The " Vorwaorts,'' the leading So-' cialist newspaper of Berlin, publishes'' sensational reports from Manaos, capital of Amazonas, the westernmost _ State of Brazil, regarding the terrible sufferings of German workmen - employed in the construction of a railway from Amazonas to Maranhao, a northern Brazilian -State bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is stated that out of a total of 600 men 300 died of malaria, which is very prevalent in the marshy coun-.' try that forms a. large portion of the basin of the Amazon river. Seventy j others who declined to work were, driven by the overseers into the 1 forest, where they suffered intense hardships. One hundred men have been sent back to Hamburg.
