SIR FREDERICK DARLEY. By Telegraph —Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 5. A private ■ cable message received here announces tbe death in London of Sir Frederick Darley, Chief Justice of New South Wales. (Received January 6, 0.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 5. AH flags were half-masted to-day on account of Sir Frederick Darley’s death. A special “Gazette” was issued expressing deep sorrow at his death and appreciation of his long and distinguished services to the State.

"In one last backward glance.; at the institution/' said a recent writer in the "Lone Hand," in a review of the New South Wales Bar, "one sees in the mind's eye the fine figure of the Chief Justice, Sir Frederick Darley—the head of our State legal system—a man, who, with all his faults (and who has none?) tower A in the perspective as one of the most conscientious, dignified, and publicspirited men that this country has ever seen."

The Hon. Sir Frederick Matthew Darley, G.C.M.G-. Chief Justice since 1886 and I/iieutenant-Govemor of New South vVales since 1891, wae the eon of'the late Henry Dairley, of County Wicklow, Ireland, and was born on September IBth, 1880. He was educated at Dungannon College and Trinity College, Dublin, graduating B.A. in 1851, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1853. Emigrating to Australia, Mr Darley, as he then was, was called to New South Wales Bar in 1862, becoming Q.C. in 1878. He was a member of the .Legislative Council from 1868 to 1886, and had a seat m the Farkes Government. from 1881 to 1883. He was a member of the Imperial itoyal ‘Commission on the South African War in 1902 during his visit to England. He was knighted in 1887, made K.C.M.G, in 1897, and G.C.M.G. in 1901. In 1860 he married Miss Lucy § Forest Browne, at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire. A CALIFORNIA CAPITALIST. SAN FRANCISCO, January 4. . Mr Darius Ogden Mills, tho San Francisco financier, is dead. Beginning life as a clerk in a New York store Mr Ogden was, at tho ago of eighty-four, one of California's richest and most influential men of -business. He went to the Golden West in 1848, founding a business, and, later, one of the leading banks in Sacramento. Interesting himself in education, he was for twelve years treasurer of the University of California, founded the Mills professorship of moral and intollecrtual .philosophy, and was one .of the first trustees of the Lick Observatory. Mr Mills was a director of a large number of railroad companies, promoted many industrial undortakings in California, was intimately connected with the art and social life of San Francisco, and a ,liberal- supporter of all charitable objects.
