BOWLING

AVELLINGTON CENTRE GAMES. SOME EXCITING FINISHES. There was a great rally on the Wei-, lington bowling green last night, when several hundreds of enthusiasts gathered to witness the piay-off of the contestants in the recent Centre Tournament. The two matches were played contemporaneously, and the spectators in both were kept keenly interested and enthusiastic, up to the Inst head. AVYLIE v. AVEBB. Some wonderfully fine bowling was wit, nessed in the game between the teams! skipped by AVylie' (Newtown) and Webb! (AVellington). Scarcely a shot went as. tray during the whole game. At the twelfth head Wylie's team got a five, which gave them a lead of four. This they increased to five at the nine-, tcenth head. At the twentieth, AVebb was lying three, and, in trying to save,, AVylie was unlucky enough to trail thejack and gave.his opponents five, making. the scores equal. In the final head the Newtown representatives scored two and thus won the match by 19 points to 17. For the winners Warwick led splendidly throughout. Duff was rather weak at number two; but Pollock at number three, and AVylie, the skip of the team, were in splendid form. Kinvig led well for AVellington, and A r eitch was excellent at number two, drawing magnificently into position repeatedly. Bush was weak. at number three, but AVebb gave a fine exposition of bowls, saving and scoring time after time. The heads were made up as follows AVylie I—l, T—2, 2—4, I—s, 2—7, 5—12, 2—14, I—ls, I—l 6, I—l 7, 2-19. AVebb. 1-1, I—2, 2—4, 3—7, 1-8, I—9, I—lo/ I—ll, I—l2, 5—17. PAEATA v. HUESTON. The leading was not so good at the commencement of this match, and tho opening heads were rather.wide. The scoring was all in favour of the AHctoria team. Te Hiwi’s had seven scored against them in the first three .heads, and were eight points down when ten. heads had been played. Here they came to light with a five, with tiro twos following, and the match was sixteen all at the sixteenth head. Parata’s team then got’a three, to which Hi/eston responded with a two, and much excitement was caused amongst the spectators. Two twos in favour of Parata. followed a splendid exhibition of bowling, and Parata led byfive with one head to play. Te Hiwi's collapsed at the last head, and when their skip went down their opponents

Were lying four. The head was practically unaltered when Hueston sent up hie last shot, which went wide, ancf, striking an outside bowl, ran beyond range, Parata winning a most, exciting match by one point. Kitto, Witt, Alayer and Hueston all played well lor Victoria, and Johnson, Dimock. Shallcraas and Parata were in turn useful for Te 11 iwi, ShaHarass towards the end of the game being particularly brilliant, and Parata bringing off some firm and drawing shots which pleased the spectators mightily. The spectacle of Churchward carrying Parata off the .green created roars of . laughter, and sent the onlookers away wreathed in smiles. The heads in this game worked out as follows: —Hueston 3—3, 2—5, 2—7, 2—9, 2-11, 2—13, 1-14, 2-16, 2—lß, 4—22;
