MISS KATHERINE GREY

Miss Katherine Gray arrived in Sydneylast week under engagement to the J. 0. Williamson Arm. She has attained a prominent position on the American stare, and is now in Australia for-the first time. Of slender, graceful presence, and striking features, the new-comer, who is a California! by birth, went on to Qie stage in New York in Augustin Daly's company, then headed by Miss Ada Kehan, who first appeared at Daly's in 1879, and remained a member of the company until the "manager's death in 1899. Miss Grey, having remained at this theatre for one season, joined one of Charley Frohman's companies . to support Miss Maude Adams, who was playing Evangeline in "All the Comforts of a Home." Since that time Miss Grey has travelled all over the TJnited States in leading roles, chiefly in modern drama, though her repertory also includes poetio and classical plays. An important venture, which she undertook in New York, was the opening of a repertory theatre at the Berkeley Lyceum, where "Candida" and "The Man of Destiny," two of Bernard Shaw's plays, formed part of the .enterprise. Miss Grey was in the first American performance "of Shaw's "Arms and the Man," produced by Richard Mansfield, and Gloria "in the same author's "You Never Can Tell" (when it was staged by Arnold Daly), is also one of her characters. With her own company last year she played in San Francisco and Denver, producing "Candida," "Arms and the Man," "The Beckoning," Clyde Fitch's "The Truth," and Isben's "A Doll's House.*She has appeared as Koxane in Mansfield's production of "Cyrano de Bergerac," find in the title role of "Sweet Kitty Bellairs." Her last engagement with Mr Frohman was in "The Thief," when Bhc and Mr Kyrle Bellew played the leading characters, Mariie and Bichard, in New York and Boston. A reorganisation of the Williamson Dramatic Companies is pending, by which several members will bo drawn into one company, which will bo headed by Mr Julius Knight and Miss Katherine Grey. The first • piece under the new order of things will be " Henry of Navarre," and hence Miss Grey will make her Australian debut in this drama early in the New Year. ,
