WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. Artillery A 1, v, Hui Mai A 1. Hui Mai B 5, v. Artillery B 2. Post and Telegraph 3, v. Pakeha 1. Karori 3, v. Y.M.C.A. 2. Petone A 2, v. Pot-one B 2. COMMENCEMENT OP SECOND BOUND. All matches set down for the Basin and Kelburne were played at Miramar yesterday. The surprise of the day was Pakeha’s defeat at the hands of the Post and Telegraph, the latter winning by 3—l. ARTILLERY A v. HUI MAI A. This game was well-fought. Artillery’s score would have been much higher but for faulty shooting. Just after starting May (Artillery) was hurt. Play went to Artillery’s quarter and remained for a while. From a good shot by Huntet-, Crichton saved. Brown (Artillery) missed a fine chance, Smith (Hui Mai), inside right, by splendid play placed the ball in Artillery’s twentyfive. Prom a roll-in Cooper over ran the ball. Kibble saved, James (Artillery) had a sprint up field and missed goal., Ba-pson (Artillery) fielded well, and port play in Hui Mai quarters. James (off side) took the ball from Bapson, and the leather went to Artillery’s twenty-five, Joyce found the line. Artillery were getting the best of the game now, and it was very exciting. Prom a free hit Hunter - (Hui Mai) put a long shot down field. Payne (Artillery) missed his shot then at goal. May (Artillery) right wing had a good tussle with Hui Mai. Payne (off side) chased the ball and a free hit by Hui Maii placed the play to Smith, who was then playing well. Hunter saved a hot shot of James, and later stopped the same man. Brown hit to James, who centred, May gave sticks inside circle. Prom the penalty corner Hui Mai placed the leather half-way up the field. Kuch (Hui Mai) from a free hit in front of goal missed gaining the desired result. Hunter again saved E-apson’s good work. James forced play towards Hui Mai’s twentyfive, passed to Rapson, who missed goal. Duncan (Hui Mai) was then prominent and saved and found the line. Cooper (Artillery) obstructed, -and- Hui Mai got a free hit. James and Duncan had a good tussle and Cooper scored the first goal for Artillery, I—o. From bully-off Payne and Cooper traversed the field and May missed a goal. McMahon was now prominent and with a hot shot found the line. H t ui Mai had the best of play then for a while, and then back the hall went to Hui Mai’s twenty-five. Cooper missed a shot at goal. First spell ended, I—o. Artillery had the best of this spell. After hnlly-off Turner was prominent. Kuoh had a run to goal, but was beatea by his opponent. Duncan then followed up a roll-in with no effect. L. Garbes made a hot shot up field. Hunter settled James for the ball then. Kuch centred later and Porter, goal-keeper (Artillery), saved, and sent a long shot down field. From a roll-in, Clementson (Hui Mai), centred to Turner, who passed to Garbes, who shot Hui Mai’s goal, I—l. Play got exciting, and Hui Mai’s goal-keeper saved a shot well. Turner’s next shot was blocked by Joyce and Porter subsequently came to the rescue. Cooper (off side) scored, but the goal was disallowed. James •gave a bad roll-in. Subsequently Duncan.centred to Turner (off side). Artillery put the play up field. Kuch then passed to Smith and then received it back again. May and Glementson had a go, the former coming off best, sending play into Hui Mai’s quarter. Turner then lost a splendid opportunity. Smith centred to Garves (off side). Porter blocked -Hearns then, and from a penalty corner taken by May, a chance was missed; so also was a second opportunity missed by Artillery. Turner was afterwards stopped from scoring by Joyce. May (Artillery) had another penalty corner. Cooper had a bad shot at goal. Rapson obstructed, and Mearns (Hui Mai) passed to Turner and then to Hoy. Joyce (Artillery) did not save when called upon to do so, and Hay nearly scored. Joyce struck wide of the ball later, but regained himself, and lifted tb© leather up and across field. May had a shot at goal then, but failed. He had another shot, and the ball struck : Hunter between the eyes and settled him for a while. Hunter deserves credit for his gameness in sticking to it; Kuoh and James gave sticks simultaneously, and Kibble from- the bully passed to Brown who carried it on to Payne. Hunter saved Kibble’s next shot._ Kuch had a shot ait goal and missed. May was obstructed by Clomentson and not penalised. Artillery were getting the best of the game here. Ulementson and Crichton had a go. Joyce got the ball, Turner secured it end Porter saved another hot shot. No further score was added at call of time. l—x. For Artillery, James, Cooper, Kibble, Joyce played well. For Ilui Mai, Hunter, Mearns, Glementson, Kuoh did good work. The ground was very heavy and bumpy. Mr George Carver refereed. POST AND TELEGRAPH v. PAKEHA.

This game was well fought out. Fairly even play was the result of the first spell, but during the second sped the victors fairly walked over their opponents. Haase (Pakeha) placed their goal during the first spell, whilst Owens scored for Post and Telegraph. X X. Towards the finish of the second spell the Pakehas moved their goalkeeper and one of the hacks into the forward ranks, which was a bad moveto make. During the second spell, Owens and Thompson each notched a goal for Post and Telegraph. S—l. Owens once took the hall right down the field, and scored a goal on his own; hut the hall only just went through. It bounced off the post, and scarcely entered between the posts. Owens Is a fast, tricky left-wing player. The Post and Telegraph forwards were very poor. Craig (centre forward) was away, and Hollis played In his stead. A new man named Player, who has never played hockey before, hut has been used to Rugby, played his best. For Post and Telegraph., Owens, Cameron, Hadfield, and Griffiths played well For Pakeha, Haase, Thompson, Ellison. Reese, and MocKay played a good game. Mr Pollard refereed. ■HOT MAI B v. ARTILLERY B. During the first spell play was very poor, and only one goal was notched by each side. Artillery B have defaulted three times now, and good play from them was not expected. During the first spell, Brown scored for Hui Mai, whilst Derrick scored for Artillery. Johnston hit three' goals and Lippitt 1 goal for Hiii Mai, and Irvine one for Artillery, the game resulting 1 3—2. Five ’ minutes after starting the second spell Artillery hit the ball into .the goal. Hui Mai ■ eaycdj and - fho ball struck Irvine in

the eye, and passed into the goal. Artillery jplayed after this with only ten men. For Hui Mai Lippitt and Smith were prominent. For Artillery, Killery and Derrick. Mr A. J. Taylor was referee. PETONB A v. PETONE B. After fifteen minutes’ even play the A’s got away, and good passing enabled J. McEweu to find the not. From a scramble in front of the circle, Taplin scored for B team. The first spell ended I—l. On resuming, B’a swept down the field. B. Howe registered B’s second goal. W. MoEwen g laced A’s second goal. Mr O. M. ay was referee. KARORI v. Y.M.C.A. This was a good game, and an open one. iNo score was registered in the first spell, both Cooper (Karori goalkeeper) and >v ilsou (Y.M.C.A.) saving many times. 0. Spiers (bully) scored first for Karori, after a good run, and notched a second shortly afterwards. Perry (Y.M.C.A.) soon scored, to bo followed by Too-by, making the score even. Evens scored Kurort's third goal shortly afterwards. 3—2. For Karori, K. and C. Spiers, Cooper, Atkin, Hendson, and E-Vans played well. For Y.M.C.A.
