Fossil carried Dst, and was ridden by G. Scobie, a eon of the veteran Victorian trainer, who was himself an intrepid horseman over fences in his young days, and won the same race the second year it was run, in 1882, when he piloted Rhesus to victory.

Fossil's success was not a popular one with the public, and a hostile demonstration was accorded the winner on returning to scale. Fossil bad performed very indifferently at two Melbourne suburban meetings held a short while previous to the V.R.G. meeting at Flem- , ington.
