HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
A DAY OF GOVERNMENT BILLS. The main items of interest in yesterday's Parliamentary proceedings are reported under separate headings. There was a discussion upon the necessity of preserving native birds, now rapidly disappearing, and sufficient was said to demonstrate that the House is thoroughly alive to tho necessity of legislating on tho subject. The .Wellington and Manawatu Railway Purchase Bill passed its second-reading stage, the Premier taking tho opportunity of explaining how tho r.egotiaticns came to a successful issue, satisfactory both to the State and the company’s shareholders. In moving the second, reading ot tho Public Bodies' Leases Bill, tht* Ecn. R. McNab said municipal corporations possessed greater power in regard to leasing than the bulk of other local bodies. It was proposed to extend the powers uf leasing to ether Peal bodies, and do away with the necessity of putting lengthy provisions . respecting leases in the various local bills Mr Massey saw no objection to the principle of the Bill, but pointed .out! a number of directions in which, minor amendments might bo made m committee.
