The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company s new steamer Tainui is to sail from Wellington on her first voyage from Dominion on January 28th. The Union Company’s new 7500 tons passenger twin-screw steamer Makura, recently launched at Horae, is timetabled to leave Sydney in the Vancouver trade on November 23rd next.

As the Anchor Company’s coastal steamer Waverloy was detained at Wellington this week r he will miss her customary- Saturday trip to-day, but will sail as usual next Tuesday. Captain Mahon, of Lyttelton, late chief officer of the Storm, has been appointed master of the barque Bankfields, now at Ljttclton. Mr Scully, latev second officer, is now chief of the Storm, and Mr Cowan has joined as second officer. The Maoriland Company’s steamer Torgauten entered Foxton at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. She will return, to Westport to-day to load for Wanganui.

The Government steamer Hinemoa arrived at Lyttelton at noon yesterday from Wellington. She is to leave Lyttelton early this morning for Godley Head and Akaroa lighthouses. The Union Company was advised that the weather at Greymouth had changed for the better yesterday morning, although there was still a heavy sea on the bar. The prospects of the bar being negotiable last night were doubtful.

The colliers Waipori and Kamona were able to enter Westport at 10 o’clock yesterday morning. The Kamona is to leave Westport at 10 o’clock to-night, coalladen for Wellington. The Tyser liner Hawke’s Bay is expected to get away from Wellington at noon to-day for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers with balance of cargo from Liverpool. Owing to the alteration in the channel at Wanganui between the internal wall and the heads, beacons will be placed on the South Spit for the purpose of locating the deepest water round the led light on the end of the wall.
