THE BAKERS’ STRIKE
COL'RT PROCEEDINGS CLOSE. THE MEN' CONVICTED—XOX FIXED. The Arbitration Court proceedings iii reference to the strike of the Wellington Operative Bakers’ Industrial L ll ion of Workers have at last terminated. The cases against tho men concerned were last week adjourned until yesterday morning in order to give tho union time to pay the line of £IOO indicted by the Court for proposing, aiding and abutting the strike. Judge Sim intimated then that if the fine wa.-, paid within a week only nominal penalties would bo inflicted on the men. The line was paid at a quarter past ten yesterday morning, and tho cases against tho men wen(silled at half-past ten. Mr Do (.Ten, inspector of Award-, announced to tho Court that the duo had been paid. The men, ho said, hud boon very severely punished by their ill-advised action, and he hoped that fact would bo taken into consider-
ation by tho Court when dealing witli them.
After a brief conference with his colleagues Air Justice Sim said —Tho line imposed on tho union having been paid the Court has decided to merely convict tho respondents in the cases brought against tho men and will not impose any penalty at all. The Court therefore convicts tho respondents fur tho offence of striking.
His Honor then rend a list of thirtytlireo names against whom a conviction wns recorded. C. Tiinming, Walter Flalt, Frederick Orcenough, Thomas Dillon, Oliver Anderson, John O’Brien, Oeor-o Meldrum, Jack B. Drown, Waller Cooper, F. W. Brewer, Thomas Stewart, Harry Hicks, John Copp.
