LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.

PKESS ASSOCIATION. DLTvraJiN, April 13. At Btilclutha to-day a deputation waited on Mr McNab with, a request that the Government should acquire Clifton and Otanomomo estates for closer settlement. The former estate comprises 15,675 acres, and the latter 5406 acres. The deputation stated that Clifton would settle from 70 to 80 farmers, and Otanomomo would provide Tand for about 36. Tho Minister admitted that there was very keen demand for land in the south. The chairman of the lAmd Purchase Board was at present in tho South Island looking at a number of properties under offer. He would communicate with him at once and get him to view Clifton. Another sop to the land hunger which has been rampant in the country for some years past will be provided by the Aotea Maori Land Board in the course of a month or two. The President (Judge T. W. Fisher) and a member of the Board (Mr H. Lundius) made an inspection last week of several blocks?; of riUtive land Between the Wanganui river and the Mam Trunk Line, and lying on both sides of the Pipiriki-Rac-tihi road, Tho total area concerned is 13,592 acres, tho blocks being as follows; Whaharangi, 5622 acre©; Upokonui, 1928 acres; Kauacopop, 113 acres; T* Autumutu. 2204 acres; Tauwhare, 3725 acres. The land lies at the back of the Morikau No. 2 block, which was thrown open at the end of 1906. Arrangements have been made for surveyors to commence work at once, and ifc is hoped that tho land will bo open forselection by Europeans within the next three months.
