CASH FOR BREAD.
A TIP FOR HOUSEHOLDERS. (To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) v Seeing that the master bakers nave resolved to put the cash system for bread into operation in Wellington, I tor one do not object, but let householders be on their puard and see that they have a scale ready so that each loaf they Da T for that they get their proper weielit, either two pounds or four pounds, as stamped or proposed to bo stamped. Some of the bakers seem to defy the law, bnt that is a case for the Inspector or Weights and Measures to see that every loaf is stamped, and also carry a scale in their carte. If the inspector was to take the trouble and stop every baker s cart on his daily round, he will find very few who carry a scale. I think the sanitary arrangements are to looked after also, so that everything connected with the bakery is kept spotlessly clean, the flour to be kept in a clean room away from mice and rats.
Now is the time for householders to demand their proper weight. Put tho loaf on your own scale in front of the deliverer of bread, and if it is two onnees short, which nearlv all loafs are, make him cut a piece from another loaf to make up for deficiency, but don't pay for two pounds if you get only one pound fourteen ounces or perhaps less. .See what a person will loose in a year, if he looses two ounces of bread on each loaf a day, and some take three and four loafs a day; that means the householder is loosing six to" eight onnees of bread every day, and to the benefit of the baker, a nice profit for master baker. Take only one loaf a day. and each loaf two ounces short, that means a loss of 39 pounds two ounces of bread in a year. Most of the householders take on the average two loafs a day; that means a loss of 78 pounds 4 ounces of bread in a year, and to help to swell the pocket of the poor baker. Be 1 aware, householders, and look for your own pockets! Now is the time when you have to pay cash at the door to see that you get your proper weight.—l am, etc., SCALES. March 13th.
