MASTEETON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MASTEETON, April 12. The General Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association met on Saturday afternoon, Mr J. D. Cruickehanh being in the 'chair, and sixteen otnerf present.

It \rtis decided to grant Mrs McMaster casement in connection with her water supply drawn from a creek on the new show grounds. Mr D. O’Rourke, of Auckland, whe judged light horses at the last show, sent a letter of Appreciation to the association for its kindness to him in the performance of his duties, and offering a prize of two guineas for the beet mar© or gelding over 15 hands high at the next show. Air E. G. Frost wrote on behalf of Hallenetein Brothers, of the Now Zrtiland Clothing Factory, stating the firm’s intention of giving a guinea trophy annually to the chow.

Mr P. McHardy, Palmerston North, returned the cheque for £1 10s forwarded him as judge’s expenses in the cAttl-e section at last show, and requested Die society to allot the money as a special prize for yearling shorthorn bull at the next show. The secretary was instructed to write to all throe donors expressing the association’s hearty appreciation of their offers, and accepting same, with thanks. The meeting regretfully accepted the resignations of two once prominent and very energetic members, namely Messro James Stuckey, late of Te Eangitiunau, and now in England, and Fred Moore, late of Masfcerton, end now in Wanganui. Several other resignations wore received.

A largo number of names of intending members were mentioned. They wii) be proposed lit the annual meeting in July next, and will probably total sixty. Mr E. Chamberlain, formerly treasurer of the association, who leaves for England in a few days on a holicfciy tour with his wife and daughters, was granted leave of absence till the end of his term, and the committee assured him that his nomination for tho general committee would bo entered at the annual meeting, when h© will bo absent.

Mr 6. C. Cooper, on behalf of the syndicate which purchased Solway, offered gratis the avenue leading to the new snow grounds from High street. The offer was ‘accepted, with thanks. A committee composed of the chairman and Messrs D. McGregor and G. C. Summerell was authorised to carry out the resolution carried at the recent general meeting of members in regard to the purchase of Solway and the sale of the old grounds. The committee was empowered to acquire a strip adjoining thy avenue, which is only half a chain wide, sufficient to make ‘it a chain and ♦a half wide.

Letters were read from Messrs P. L. end D. E. Parton in reference to the disposal of the old show grounds, asking on what terms the association would soli. A committee was appointed to go into tho matter. Tho tender of Mr T. P. Lett at £35 10s was Accepted for grazing rights on the old show grounds for a year. Mr G. C. Summerell, treasurer of the finance committee, reported a debit balance at the bank of ,£365 12s 4d. Mr E. J. Wilson, of Johnsonville, wrote asking that the association should pay him .£lO 10s compensation for a ewe lost by him at the recent show. As the rules state that the society recognises no responsibility in this respect, the committee resolved it could not accede to the request. Messrs Gawith and Logan, solicitors to the Association, remitted <£2 10s, outstanding subscriptions placed in their hands for collection.

Accounts totalling. 2e 5d were passed for payment.

CARTERTON.

CARTERTON, April 11. It was twelve months on Saturday since the gasworks were officially opened. At the end of May there were three consumers, and now there tore 165. The consumption of gas averaged 130,000 feet per month. The number of connections is steadily increasing.

Mrs A. Matthews, of Waiorongomai, has received word from the Hutt that one of the recently imported stud Romney rams under treatment for W bad leg hao died. Mrs Matthew's put a value of j£loo on the ram. Others of the same importation are in splendid condition. Plans are out for a lAmdsome new post office for Featherston, to have a frontage of 39 feet to Fitzherbert street. At the annual meeting of tho Carterton Gun Club the financial position was reported to be very strong, there being U credit balance in the bank of «£l2 Ss Id. Two new,, members were elected. Officers for the ensuing year were appointed as follows President, Mr J. Oates; vice-presidents, Messrs G. W. Bailor, J. T. M. Hornsby. M.P., W. C Buchanan, B. Scanneli, Win. Halley, and tV. H. Booth. Mr C. S. Beechey was reelected hon. secretary. It wars decided to hold a ofciy bird match for .£7 on April 25th, nominations to be 7s 6.1 single, and 12s 6d double. It was resolved not to hold a live bird match till between' October and December.

FEATHERSTON COUNTY COUNCIL. . The Featherston County Council met at Martinborough on Friday. Present: Councillors Matthews (chairman), A. O. Considine, W. J. Nix, x. Benton, T. F. Evans, J. McMasters, and M. J, H. Jackson.

Tlie finances were reported to be:— County fund account. Dr. .£385 0s 9d; local bodies' loans. Dr .£36 11s lid. Accounts amounting to .£1642 were paused for payment. The Wfcirarapa P. and A. Society wr/ote asking co-operation in support of Mr W. C. Buchanan's offer to the Government in connection with the experimental farm. Councillors Matthews and Considino were appointed to act in any manner necessary in connection witli same.

A case of scarlet fewer was reported from Hikarewa.

The Council decided that a report from Mr G. Laing-Mrtison, C.E., on the feasibility of extending the Moroa water races, showed that such scheme was inadvisable.-

The Council was notified by the Wairarapa District Hospiftil Board that its contribution this year for maintenance amounted to £299 l?e.

Councillor MoMaster was authorised to procure an engineer's report on the cost of bridging the Taurtmganui river and constructing protective works. The oanitary inspector's report showed the following infectious case© to have occurred for the quarter ending March 3-lst; —On© case of scarlet fever each at Pirinoa, Tauherenikau, Cross Creek, and Kahautara; on© case of diphtheria at Dyewille; one of tuberculosis at Hillside.

J. W. Henderson was appointed county ranger out of ten applications.

NEW EXPERIMENTAL, FARM

OFFER OF A SITE. PRESS ASSOCIATION. MASTERTON, April 12. The question of th© establishment of

an experimental farm In the Wairarapli was brought up again at the meeting of the General Committee of the Masterton Agricultural And Pastoral Association on Saturday. The committee had at its previous meeting received a letter from the Featherston Chamber of Commerce asking it to co-operate with the Chamber in urging upon the Government the advisability ot establishing such a farm in the Wairarapa, but no action was taken. , . . Air Wm. Perrv, in re-introducing the -übjrct at Saturday’s meeting, And that information of such an important character had now been mad© public that the committee was justified in acting upon the letter from the FcUtherston Chamber. He referred to the generous offer of Air \V. C. Buchanan to give a site worth XSOOO for the purpose of an experimental farm and «£IOOO towards stocking it. Mr Perry said that such an offer was very exceptional, and he could not understand why the Government hesitated about accepting it. He moved:—

That the Government be urged to accept Mr Buchanan’s offer lind that it be pointed out how beneficial an experimental farm would be to the wide agricultural district. After considerable discussion the motion was carried unanimously.
