The British Secretary ol State for War, the Right Hon. R. B. Haldane, is appealing tc employers to give their employees facilities to join the territorial forces. The London County Council loan of two and three-quarters millions at 3} per cent interest, was subscribed over tonfold. There were 26,504 Chinese on the Rand at the end of March. The railway from Bloemfontein to Kimberley has been opened. ' M, Poufeaux, a French chemist, has invented an electric gun which he claims will fire 1200 shots a minute.
A Bill making it a felony to gamble on horse-racing in New York State was defeated in the Senate, 25 voting for and 25 against the measure. The Victorian Agent-General, Mr J W. Taverner, has arranged for demonstrations of bread-making with Australian flour at the Bakers and Confectioners’ Exhibition in September. The demonstrations will require three Australian bakers' to prove that it is not essential to mix other flour with Australian.
