HAD TRIED THAT TOO.
At a county town situated near to a garrison town in the West of .England, a prisoner was brought up and cha.ged with being drunk and disorderly, and with fighting in: the str<et. He was a tall, well-built, strapping young fellow, but evidently an old offender, for the judge or magistrate, after inflicting a fine, whicu was paid by a friend of the prisoner's in court, asked him if he had any work to do. The prisoner replied that he was out of work. "You seem to be frequently getting into trouble by drinking and fighting,' said the judge. "Why don't you go for a soldier?"
"Not me/* was the answer. "I did once, your worship, and ho very nearly killed mo."
