CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

COXTROI. OF THE EGG MARKET. SPREAD OF ODDFELLOW SHIP, (Special to “N.Z. Times.”) CHRISTCHURCH, April 10 At the meeting of poultry-breeder* held last night, when tho Canterbury Egg and Poultry Co-operative Association was formed, the chairman said that for some time past . they mid suffered 1 a deal owing to the want of a suitable market whore theiproduco could he sold to the ' advantage, and it was tho opinion of many farmers Hint steps should taken to rectify this matter. The ega market at present was in y tho nauda of the consumer, but they did not want this state of affairs to continue. They wanted ti. tell the consumer tho price of the eggs and poultry not vice versa. The only way to obviate this difficulty was by co-opcra-tion, aiid if that wore done the consumer would bo sure of obtaining the best value for his outlay, while tho producer would receive a fair jirofit for his labour. Some years ago a step similar to that which they wore trying to take that day was taken in Auckland, with the result that a company was formed ■ which was at present in a flourishing condition. Soon after this company started operations tho price of eggs advanced rapidly, and in a little while tho major portion of tbs' eggs and poultry trade was in the company’s hands. Mr P. Herons, of Christchurch, who has taken an interest in tho Cook Islands ever since some of tho islanders came to this city to attend the International Exhibition, says that tho stringent regulations in regard fo imported fruit, are likely fo prove disastrous to tho importation of Cook Island oranges. Three fourths of the oranges consumed in New Zealand come from the Cook group, and if the Department of Agriculture insists on enforcing its regulations to keep out the fruit fly tho trade will bo absolutely destroyed. Mr Hercua urges that the Cook Islands should bo treated in the same way as any infested district in New Zealand. ,
