CHARGE OP FORGERY. THURSDAY FOOTBALL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MASTER-TON, April 10. Mr IV. P. James, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Police Court at Mastorton to-day. Two first-offenders wore charged with insobriety. One man was arrested on the show-grounds. A fmo of 5s was imposed. George Grooves, a young man, appeared to answer a charge of forging and uttering a cheque signed IV. Morrison. and purporting to He issued by Mr Hugh Morrison, shoep-farmer, to Mrs Clara Jackson, wifo_ of a Lansdowno storekeeper. The evidence showed that accused had previously uttered the cheque to the wife of the licensee of the Prince of Wales Hotel (Mrs Barclay), who detected something amiss with the signature, and refused to accept it. Accused was smartly arrested at Carterton by Constable Ingram. He pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.

A very pleasant little soiree was held in Radomski’s rooms on Thursday evening, when the lady friends of Hie Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club were entertained by the management committee. Captain B. R. Daniel presided, and paid a high 'compliment to the ladies for their assistance to the club at its carnival and at the first annual “social.” A pleasant time, was spent, with musical items and speeches, the gathering winding up -with cheers for the ladies. The weather took a decided turn for the better here last night. Tiro atmosphere has been particularly keen for some days, but has now lost its acerbity. The Tararua ranges present a very beautiful spectacle from the valley, being coated with a light mantle of snow on the higher peaks. The annual meeting of ■ the Wairarapa Rugby Thursday Union was held at Carterton on Thursday evening. Representatives from the Mastorton, Carterton, and Featherston Clubs ' attended. It was pointed out that the Featherston Club, was the only one to comply with the rule that names of delegates for tho ensuing year should be sent in in writing. The balancesheet disclosed that the finances ’ of tho union wore not in a flourishing condition. Tho Liberal and Rover Chibs each donated two guineas to , the funds. Moore vice-presidents. Three teams each will compete in .the senior and junior competition*, viz., Albion. Rover, and liberal. The season ’ ivilj open on April 23rd; Financially; the union is in a weak position, and the Liberal and Royer Clubs have each voted two, guineas to tho funds of tho union. -
